The Kano State Government has refuted allegations by Buba Galadima accusing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Kano State Command, of suppressing opposition voices.
In a press briefing, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, described the claims as “false, malicious, and politically contrived,” insisting that the administration remains committed to democratic principles and the protection of fundamental rights.
The government said it would not allow what it termed “misinformation and personal vendettas” to distort public perception or erode confidence in democratic institutions.
According to the statement, the allegations resurfaced shortly after Governor Yusuf’s defection to the All Progressives Congress and followed Galadima’s removal as Chairman of the Board of Kano State Polytechnic.
The government maintained that his removal was based strictly on administrative considerations relating to performance and competence.
“It is evident that the current media outburst is driven by personal grievance and loss of official privilege rather than any genuine concern for democracy or civil liberties,” the statement said.
The administration categorically denied directing security agencies to harass or intimidate political opponents, stressing that security operations in the state are conducted strictly within the ambit of the law and based on credible complaints, not political directives.
The government further noted that freedom of expression, as guaranteed by the Constitution, does not extend to defamation, incitement, or the spread of deliberate falsehood capable of threatening public peace.
“No responsible government will fold its arms while individuals weaponize social media and public platforms to tarnish reputations and incite unnecessary tension,” the statement added.
While reaffirming support for security agencies operating in the state, the government said it remains open to constructive criticism and democratic engagement but will not tolerate attempts to destabilize Kano through “false narratives and calculated propaganda.”
The statement also maintained that Governor Yusuf’s administration remains inclusive and accountable, with opposition figures and the media operating freely across the state.
“The Kano State Government remains determined in its commitment to democratic principles, the rule of law, and peaceful coexistence,” the commissioner said, urging political actors and commentators to verify facts and avoid sensational claims capable of inflaming public sentiment.
The government concluded that Governor Yusuf continues to enjoy widespread political support in Kano State and remains firmly in control of the state’s political affairs.
