Relief has come for thousands of federal retirees as the federal government finally released the delayed February 2026 pension, prompting the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) to commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for ensuring that pensioners did not have to endure a prolonged wait for their entitlements.
The union said the payment has brought much-needed relief to pensioners across the country who depend almost entirely on their monthly pensions to meet basic needs such as food, medication and other essential expenses.
Reacting to the development, the President of the union, Godwin Abumisi, expressed appreciation to the President for facilitating the release of the pension before the situation degenerated into a life-threatening crisis for many retirees. Abumisi said the payment came at a crucial time when anxiety had begun to mount among pensioners following the delay in the release of the February pension.
“We appreciate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for ensuring that pensioners were not pushed to a life-threatening point before receiving their February pension. Many retirees rely solely on their monthly pension for survival, and any delay can cause serious hardship,” he said.
He noted that the payment had restored hope among many retirees who had become worried about how they would cope with their daily needs during the period of uncertainty.
According to him, pensioners across the country had been anxiously waiting for the payment, stressing that the release of the funds has brought a sense of relief to many elderly citizens who depend on their pensions to sustain their livelihoods.
“Most pensioners depend entirely on their monthly pension to meet their daily needs, including feeding and medical care. The payment of the February pension has therefore brought relief and renewed confidence among retirees who had been worried about the delay,” Abumisi stated.
While commending the President for the intervention, the NUP president urged the Federal Government to take necessary steps to ensure that such delays do not occur again.
He stressed that pensioners should not be subjected to avoidable hardship arising from delays in the payment of their entitlements, especially considering the vulnerable condition of many retirees.
“We commend the President for ensuring that the February pension has now been paid. However, we urge the government to put every necessary measure in place to ensure that this kind of delay does not happen again,” he said.
Abumisi added that many retirees depend on their pensions to purchase essential medications and manage age-related health conditions, warning that prolonged delays in payment could expose pensioners to serious health risks.
According to him, ensuring timely and regular payment of pensions remains a fundamental responsibility of the government to citizens who dedicated the most productive years of their lives to the service of the nation.
He emphasised that pensioners deserve to live their retirement years with dignity and security, stressing that prompt payment of pensions would reinforce confidence in the government’s commitment to the welfare of retired public servants across the country.
