The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has approved adjustments to the timetable and schedule of activities for the conduct of the 2026 Local Government Elections in Plateau State, extending the period for political parties to conduct their primaries.
In a statement issued by the Commission’s Secretary, Hon. Pam Gyang Davou, it was stated that the repeal of the Electoral Act, 2022, and the enactment of the Electoral Act, 2026, necessitated the adjustments.
Recall that PLASIEC had earlier issued the Notice of Election and released the timetable on Thursday, 4 September 2025, in compliance with the provisions of Sections 15, 19, 21, and 33 of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission Law, 2024, and the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022.
Under the revised schedule, political parties will now conduct their primaries from Saturday, 7 March to Tuesday, 7 April 2026, replacing the earlier closing date of 12 March 2026.
“Consequently, the collection of nomination forms by political parties will take place from 8 to 10 April 2026, while the submission of nomination forms to the Commission is scheduled for 13 to 17 April 2026,” the statement said
It further highlighted that the publication of personal particulars of candidates will hold on 20 April 2026, followed by the screening of Chairmanship candidates and their running mates from 22 to 25 April 2026, and the screening of Councillorship candidates from 26 to 30 April 2026.
According to the revised timetable, the list of qualified candidates will be published on 20 May 2026, while appeals by aggrieved aspirants will be received on 21 May and heard on 22 May 2026.
The Commission added that the final list of nominated candidates will be published on 8 June 2026, while political campaigns will officially commence on 9 June 2026.
Other key activities in the timetable remain unchanged, including the publication of the official register of voters on 21 July 2026, the submission of names of polling agents by political parties on 12 August 2026, and the publication of the Notice of Poll on 17 August 2026.
Political campaigns will end at midnight on Monday, 7 September 2026, ahead of the elections scheduled to hold in the seventeen Local Government Areas of Plateau State on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm.
The Commission reassured political parties, stakeholders, and the general public of its commitment to conducting free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections in accordance with the law and global best practices.
It urged all political parties to strictly comply with the revised timetable and other guidelines issued for the conduct of the elections.
