Pricing flights and visas with an unknown agent is very risky because, at the beginning of the negotiation, it may seem realistic, but before you realize it, your hard-earned money has vanished into thin air.

According to a recent Tribune Online report, in a move to eradicate quacks and scammers, the national deputy President of the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies (NANTA), Dr. Tokunbo Dragooned, called for strict professional operations in the travel industry.
Why Fake Travel Agents Are Everywhere
Travel demand has exploded as a lucrative way to earn. With everyone interested in Japa, going on vacation, attending conferences, studying abroad, and beyond. Naturally, scammers saw an opportunity and jumped in with both feet.
Social media has made it worse to reckon. Anyone can open an Instagram page, lift some photos from legit agencies, add the CEO of a Travel agency to their bio, and start a travel consultancy.
According to Baccalaureate Nigeria, which published how to identify fake travel agencies in Nigeria, many scammers now operate entirely online, making it harder for victims to track them down once the money is gone. Their findings show that most victims are first-time travelers who do not understand how the travel industry works.
Also, professional travel consultants, in a recent People.com travel fraud report, issued a warning, making it clearer that travel scams are now global, organised, and dangerously convincing.
They rush you a lot
Instead of allowing you to process or plan your trip conveniently, they rush you with convincing comments. “Madam, if you don’t pay today, this slot will expire.” Or, “Bro, prices will change in the next one hour,” are the terms you will hear.
Fake agents thrive on pressure. They want you to panic, stop thinking, and just pay. Whereas real travel agents understand that travel planning takes time. They will walk you through flight options, visa steps, insurance, and timelines.
So, once urgency becomes aggressive, just know that pressure is often bait.
No physical office or verifiable address
Although some legit agencies work remotely. And the difference? You can still verify their business location. Fake agents dodge simple questions that go about asking where their office? Do you have a registered business address?
If the answers are vague or change every time, that is a serious red flag. A legitimate agency won’t hide its footprint.
Suspiciously cheap offers
Undoubtedly, everybody loves discounts. But when flight tickets that normally cost over N1 million suddenly drop to N350k, common sense should kick in.
Scammers use cheap offers to cloud judgment. According to travel consultants interviewed by People.com, unusually low prices remain one of the biggest red flags when booking flights or holiday packages online.
Airlines operate fixed pricing systems. If the offer looks magical, it probably is, and not in a good way.
No official documentation or contracts
Professional agencies issue service agreements, booking invoices, official receipts, and payment breakdowns. However, fake agents promise they will send everything later. And later never comes. Before parting with a single naira, insist on paperwork; if they hesitate, walk away.
Payment requests to personal accounts
This is one of the loudest fake travel agent’s red flags. Legitimate agencies use corporate accounts while scammers rely on personal bank details because they are easier to drain and harder to trace.
So, if payment instructions include personal accounts, multiple random accounts, and crypto wallets without explanation, that’s your cue to stop immediately.
They guarantee visa approval
Nobody can guarantee visa approval. Not your uncle. Not your pastor. Not the smoothest agent in Lagos.
