On February 11, 2026, at Mairo Tijjani Girls Science and Technical College in Kano, a familiar challenge in education was being addressed in an intentional way.
The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), Kano Chapter, organized a Career Talk to mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. But the intervention was more than commemorative. It was strategic.
For decades, education researchers have pointed to a persistent “leaky pipeline” in STEM, where girls show early academic ability in science and mathematics but gradually disengage due to lack of exposure, mentorship, and visible career pathways. Events like the one in Kano directly target that vulnerability point.
Practicing engineers shared lived experiences, demystified engineering pathways, and addressed structural barriers young women often anticipate in technical fields. Students responded not with hesitation but with confidence, asking informed questions about innovation, technology-driven careers, and professional growth.
What unfolded in Kano was not simply inspiration, it was early-stage capacity building.
The Private Sector Steps In
Yet early exposure cannot rely solely on professional associations. Increasingly, private-sector partnerships are reinforcing this foundation.
One notable example is the collaboration between IHS Nigeria and the Women’s Technology Empowerment Center (W.TEC). Their programs focus on inspiring secondary-school girls to consider futures in STEM through hands-on learning, mentorship, and exposure to real-world engineering applications. By situating STEM within tangible problem-solving environments, such initiatives address the structural barriers that often discourage girls from persisting in technical tracks.
Education analysts frequently argue that formal school systems alone cannot provide sufficient experiential learning in emerging technical fields. Corporate partnerships help bridge this gap — introducing equipment, practical workshops, digital literacy training, and industry visibility that classrooms may lack.
In this sense, private-sector engagement functions as an accelerant. It complements the curriculum with context. Government as Enabler
At the policy level, the Nigerian government has also taken steps that signal institutional recognition of women’s technical leadership.
In a landmark initiative, 14 women engineers were awarded ₦200 million in innovation grants, marking a significant financial investment in women-led engineering solutions. This move does more than fund projects. It reframes women engineers as economic actors capable of shaping infrastructure, industrial systems, and technological advancement at scale.
From a workforce development perspective, such targeted funding addresses a second major pipeline challenge: transition from expertise to enterprise. Many technically trained women face capital barriers when attempting to commercialize innovations. Financial empowerment programs narrow that gap, enabling scalability.
Together, private-sector engagement and public investment create reinforcing structures: early inspiration, professional continuity, and innovation funding.
The Global Reinforcement Layer
Layered onto these local and national efforts is another emerging force, globally trained professionals reinvesting expertise into African ecosystems.

As a two-time STEM coach across multiple African countries, her mentorship reinforces what education scholars call “vertical continuity” ensuring that once girls enter the STEM pathway, professional guidance sustains them through career transitions.

When viewed in isolation, each initiative Kano outreach, private-sector workshops, innovation grants, global mentorship appears impactful. But the more significant story emerges when they are examined collectively.

If these layers continue to align, Nigeria’s STEM pipeline may not only grow more inclusive, it may become structurally resilient.
