Ibadan’s nightlife hasn’t been same since I went on break—Temitope ‘Topside’ Adedeji

In this interview with Yetunde Ajanaku, Temitope Adedeji shares insights into his journey in the nightlife industry, the inspiration behind launching his new club ‘Admin’, and the challenges and opportunities shaping Ibadan’s entertainment scene.

You have been in the nightlife business for quite some time. What inspired you to venture into the club industry in the first place?

My journey into the nightlife industry was driven by passion and business interest. I have always loved bringing people together in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. The idea of creating a space where people can unwind, socialise, and have a good time was something that inspired me from the beginning.

The nightlife industry can be very competitive. How have you managed to stay relevant and sustain your business over the years?

Competition is actually part of what makes the business interesting. When there are other players in the industry, it pushes you to keep improving. Since we went on break at a time, many people have said the nightlife scene in Ibadan hasn’t been the same. But we believe that competition motivates us to do better. What we offer is unique and different, and that is what keeps our brand relevant.

What are some of the biggest challenges club owners face today, especially with economic pressures and changing entertainment preferences?

There are several challenges, particularly government policies and unstable power supply. Running a nightlife business requires consistent electricity and adherence to regulations, which can sometimes be difficult. These challenges are part of what business owners in the industry have to navigate regularly.

How do you balance creating an exciting nightlife experience while also ensuring safety and responsible entertainment for guests?

Safety and security have always been our top priorities. Since I started in the nightlife industry, we have maintained a strong focus on ensuring that our environment is safe for everyone. There has never been a time when security became an issue because we take it very seriously. Our goal is to ensure guests enjoy themselves in a safe and controlled atmosphere.

What role does music, DJs, and entertainment play in shaping the identity of your club?

Music and DJs play a very important role in the nightlife experience. In fact, without DJs there is practically no club. Over the years, I have worked with many talented DJs and we have maintained great relationships. They bring energy, excitement, and creativity that make the club experience memorable for guests.

Opening a new club also means creating jobs. What opportunities will this new venture provide for young people and professionals in the entertainment industry?

One thing I value is maintaining a good relationship with everyone who has worked with me. The nightlife business creates opportunities for many people—from DJs and entertainers to service staff and security personnel. Our goal is to continue providing employment and opportunities for young people who are passionate about the entertainment industry.

Your new club is called ‘Admin’. How did the name come about?

The name has a personal meaning to me. When I was in school, I studied Public Administration and I used to call myself “Administrator.” The word ‘Admin’ comes from that idea. It represents someone who is in charge, someone who leads. In the nightlife industry, we believe we are bringing something unique and taking charge of the experience we offer our guests.

How can Ibadan’s nightlife industry become more engaging?

Ibadan can become more engaging if operators continue to introduce fresh ideas and creative experiences for guests. He explained that club owners and entertainment promoters need to constantly innovate, collaborate with talented DJs and entertainers, and create unique atmospheres that attract different audiences.

What advice would you give to people who want to venture into the entertainment or nightlife industry?

My advice is that they should be creative, committed, and focused. It is also important to be prayerful and to clearly understand what you want to achieve. When you combine passion with discipline and purpose, you can succeed in the industry.
