The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), through the Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES), has provided free surgical procedures and other health support for indigent mothers at Kuje General Hospital as part of activities marking International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026.
The intervention saw seven mothers receive free surgeries under the Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC) Programme in line with the policy of the Federal Ministry of Health.
The Mandate Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, who led the outreach at the hospital, said the initiative was designed to celebrate women while reducing the financial burden many families face in accessing maternal healthcare.
During the visit, Fasawe interacted with patients, new mothers, caregivers and female health workers who remained on duty caring for the sick even as the world marked the annual celebration of women.
Food items, cash support and other provisions were also distributed to patients, medical staff and relatives keeping vigil with their loved ones in the hospital.
Fasawe said the gesture was meant to appreciate the sacrifices of women and provide relief for families already grappling with the emotional and financial strain of illness.
She also highlighted other programmes of the Secretariat aimed at supporting women and improving health outcomes. These include free health insurance enrolment for vulnerable women, distribution of insecticide-treated nets, cooking gas support, baby kits for newborns and other medical palliatives designed to improve access to essential healthcare and safer living conditions.
According to her, the philosophy behind the interventions is that supporting women leads to broader gains for families and communities.
“When society supports women, the gains are reflected in healthier children, stronger homes and more resilient communities,” she said.
Fasawe toured several wards during the visit, encouraging patients and their families while commending caregivers for their dedication. She also offered comfort to bereaved families, providing support during their moments of grief.
She further praised medical personnel at Kuje General Hospital for their resilience and commitment to duty, particularly for remaining on duty during the weekend and on a day many would ordinarily celebrate with their families.
Responding on behalf of the hospital management, the Medical Director, Dr. Ayeni, thanked the Mandate Secretary for the visit and humanitarian support, noting that the intervention boosted the morale of patients and their families.
The outreach reinforced the message of International Women’s Day 2026 that investing in the wellbeing of women ultimately benefits families, communities and society at large.
