The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has disclosed that its operatives arrested 20 suspects for various electoral offences during last Saturday’s Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The anti-corruption commission made this known in a statement, adding that the suspects were arrested across the FCT for offences ranging from vote buying and vote selling to obstruction of officers, involving a total sum of N17,218,700.00.
According to the EFCC, “One of the suspects was arrested with a sum of N13,500,000 (Thirteen Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira) in a car parked beside a polling booth in the Kwali Local Government Area.
“Two of the suspects were arrested in Abaji; nine in Gwagwalada; four in Kuje, and the remaining four in Kwali.”
It added that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The commission had, on the eve of the elections, disclosed that it deployed its operatives across the six Area Councils in the FCT with a view to ensuring electoral integrity and tackling inducement.
The EFCC Chairman, Mr Ola Olukoyede, had charged the officers to ensure strict surveillance across all the council areas and prevent incidents of vote buying and other electoral malpractices.
